Smog Check:
Getting a smog check doesn’t have to be stressful. Follow these useful tips to ensure your vehicle is prepared and has the best chance of passing the California smog inspection.
1. Keep Your Vehicle Well Maintained
Regular oil changes, clean air filters, and properly functioning spark plugs can significantly improve your vehicle’s emissions and help you pass the test.
2. Clear the “Check Engine” Light
If your Check Engine Light is on, your vehicle will automatically fail the California smog inspection. Make sure to have any underlying issues diagnosed and repaired before your appointment.
3. Drive the Vehicle Before the Test
Drive your car for at least 15 to 20 minutes at highway speeds before arriving at the smog station. This ensures that the catalytic converter and other emission control components reach their optimal operating temperatures.
4. Check Your Coolant and Oil Levels
A vehicle running hot or with low oil is more likely to produce higher emissions. Ensure your fluids are topped off and the engine is running at a normal temperature.
5. Make Sure Your Battery Hasn’t Been Recently Disconnected
If your battery was recently disconnected or replaced, your vehicle’s computer monitors may have been reset. Drive the car for a few days under normal conditions to allow the internal monitors to “re-read” and become ready for the inspection.
